Biofilm

What is Biofilm?

Biofilm refers to a structured community of microorganisms, often bacteria, that adhere to surfaces and produce a protective matrix. In medical settings—especially in surgery—biofilm formation is a major concern because it can develop on surgical instruments, implants, and other medical devices, increasing the risk of infection.

Unlike free-floating bacteria, biofilms are highly resistant to antibiotics and disinfectants, making them difficult to eliminate once formed. Their presence in sterile processing workflows or on reusable instruments can compromise patient safety and lead to serious complications.

Why is Biofilm Important in Surgical Operations?

While biofilm itself is not a desired feature of surgical workflows, awareness of it is critical for hospitals aiming to ensure reliable sterilization and infection prevention. Sterile Processing Departments (SPDs) must use validated cleaning protocols and technologies that effectively remove biofilm before instruments are reused in surgical procedures.

Failing to detect or eliminate biofilm can lead to:

  • Postoperative infections
  • Compromised patient outcomes
  • Costly readmissions
  • Compliance issues with regulatory bodies (e.g., The Joint Commission, AAMI, CDC)

By investing in enhanced instrument tracking, cleaning validation, and documentation, hospitals can minimize biofilm risks and maintain high standards of care.

Quick Facts

  • Biofilms are microbial colonies that form on moist surfaces, including surgical tools and implants
  • Common concern in SPD, OR, and infection prevention workflows
  • Requires specialized cleaning and disinfection protocols to eliminate
  • Not a process to automate—but a risk to detect and prevent
