Endoscope Reprocessing

What is Endoscope Reprocessing?

Endoscope reprocessing is the multistep procedure used to clean, disinfect, and prepare flexible and rigid endoscopes for reuse in medical and surgical procedures. These complex instruments feature internal channels and intricate components, which makes them especially difficult to clean. If not properly reprocessed, endoscopes can harbor dangerous pathogens and pose a serious infection risk to patients.

The reprocessing cycle involves pre-cleaning, leak testing, manual cleaning, high-level disinfection (or sterilization), rinsing, drying, and storage. Each step must be performed in strict accordance with manufacturer instructions and regulatory standards, such as AAMI ST91 and CDC guidelines.

Why is Endoscope Reprocessing Important?

Endoscope-related infections are a major concern in healthcare, and most are linked to improper or incomplete reprocessing. Because endoscopes are used in minimally invasive procedures across many departments—such as GI, pulmonology, and surgery—ensuring their cleanliness and safety is critical.

A single breakdown in the reprocessing cycle can result in cross-contamination, delayed procedures, or compliance violations. By standardizing and automating endoscope reprocessing, hospitals can reduce errors, protect patients, and ensure consistency across departments.

Additionally, many hospitals use instrument tracking systems, barcode scanning, and workflow automation tools to document each step of the process. This helps ensure traceability, supports auditing, and enhances accountability for reprocessing staff.
