First Pass Yield (FPY) is a quality performance metric that measures the percentage of surgical instruments or sets that successfully complete reprocessing without requiring rework or correction. In the context of sterile processing, it reflects how many trays or items pass inspection the first time—without being sent back for additional cleaning, repairs, or assembly adjustments.

Hospitals use FPY to evaluate the overall effectiveness of cleaning, assembly, and quality control procedures in the Sterile Processing Department (SPD). A high FPY indicates well-functioning systems, trained staff, and consistent adherence to protocols.

Why is First Pass Yield Important?
