What Is a UDI (Unique Device Identifier)?

A Unique Device Identifier (UDI) is a standardized code assigned to medical devices that enables accurate identification and tracking throughout the healthcare supply chain. The UDI system was developed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to improve patient safety, enhance post-market surveillance, and streamline product recalls.

Each UDI includes two key components: the Device Identifier (DI), which identifies the product and manufacturer, and the Production Identifier (PI), which includes information such as lot number, serial number, and expiration date.

Why Is UDI Important in Surgical Operations?

In surgical settings, where precision and accountability are critical, the ability to track medical devices using UDI is essential. It allows hospitals to match specific devices to patient records, verify expiration dates, and quickly identify affected products during recalls.

UDI also improves traceability during inventory management, billing, and reprocessing workflows. For example, capturing a device’s UDI during a procedure helps ensure accurate documentation, speeds up charge capture, and reduces the risk of errors.

Hospitals typically scan UDI barcodes into EHRs, ERP platforms, or instrument tracking systems. This integration supports real-time visibility across departments, enabling automated updates and compliance with both FDA UDI regulations and The Joint Commission standards.

In high-volume hospitals, adopting UDI not only enhances patient safety but also simplifies vendor coordination, strengthens audit readiness, and supports cost-control initiatives.
