It is estimated that there is over $5 billion of waste each year related to process inefficiency handling vendor-managed trays. This cost is split evenly with the manufacturers and the hospitals. Here are some of the big examples of inefficiency in the supply chain process:
– Poor scheduling practices in the OR. Incorrect procedure booking can lead to a last-minute scramble to sterilize vendor trays, increasing processing costs and potentially delaying cases.
– Failure to capture implant charges. Revenue leakage due to inefficient billing practices is the largest source of waste for hospitals in managing implants.
– Slow moving inventory, loss, and expiration. Without clear communication and well- managed vendor inventory, instruments and implants can be left and forgotten about on the storage shelves of the hospital.
