For hospitals to get a handle on their vendor processes and reduce waste, there first must be collaboration between the clinical teams and Supply Chain. A multi-disciplinary team consisting of supply chain personnel and clinical staff should review vendor policies and compliance data. Surgeons should be engaged early and often in the process. The hospital cannot expect Sterile Processing to be the sole gate keepers and evaluators of whether the vendor trays are complete and ready for use. The hospital needs to address late deliveries and missing instrumentation in the implant contracts. The implant contracts and vendor policies should be codified in such a way that is beneficial to the hospital and holds vendors appropriately accountable for delivery times, removal of used trays, and billing.
